The Cabinet was today apprised of the joint declaration signed between India and Germany on extending the tenure of Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC).
The move will foster the continuation of the research work between the two countries in the bio-medical devices and health care fields.
The Joint Declaration, which was signed in October last year to extend IGSTC's tenure from 2017 till 2022, has also increased its funding from Euros 2 million per year to Euros 4 million by each side.
Scientific cooperation between Indian and Germany extends in several areas. The IGSTC also does research in advanced manufacturing, biomedical devices and health care, nanotechnology automobile engineering, water sensors, clean energy technology and information and computing technology.
The new declaration will enable IGSTC to enhance, strengthen and improve research and technology through cooperation between laboratories, academia and industry of both the countries.
In November last year, a delegation of German parliamentarians had met Union minister Harsh Vardhan to devise ways for enhanced partnership between the two countries in the field of Science and Technology.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany had established IGSTC in Gurgaon in 2007 to foster innovation.
