Carpenter seeks court help for CBI enquiry into son's death

A carpenter has sought help of the Madras High Court for a CBI enquiry into the mysterious disappearance of his son, who was a deck cadet on a ship of state owned Poompuhar Shipping Corporation Ltd.
Justice N Kirubakaran sought a status report into the investigation and ordered notice to the officials, including police at Tuticorin, the corporation Managing director and Marine police of Paradip port in Odisha, among others.
Carpenter K Saravanan contended that police at Tuticorin had registered a missing case of his son Kannan on February 21 2012 but there was no progress in the investigation.
The inspector had also suggested to the MD to lodge a complaint with Marine Police at Paradip and had also sent a copy of the letter to police there, who had not conducted any enquiry, he said.

The MD had sought the help of cellphone firms to provide details of calls made by his son but the Telecom Department had insisted this could be done only if police sought for it.
Saravanan said his son had spoken to his mother every day from January 31 to February 3 but not on Feb 4 and 5 when he went missing.

He said his son was then working in the ship, proceeding to Paradip from kolkata.
The ship's Chief Officer said Kannan was working on Feb 5. His friend had had woken him up at 15:30 hrs that day, but that he did not report for duty at 16:00 hrs.

An enquiry by the Principal officer of Mercantile marine department concluded the cause of disappearance was a mystery and that Kannan could have accidentally fallen into the sea while making phone calls. Since the remains of his son had not been found, it could not be concluded as a death, he said.
Earlier Saravanan had filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court, which was closed after the enquiry report said there was no foul play in the death of the youth.
