CB registers case against cop for wrongful confinement

The Crime Branch of Odisha Police today registered a case against a sub-inspector on charge of wrongful confinement of two persons in a murder case.
A case has been registered against Rashmi Ranjan Jena, the then investigating officer (IO) of the alleged murder of a woman at Dhadasahi village under Morada Police Station in Mayurbhanj district.
Jena has been booked under section 342 (wrongful confinement), 344 (wrongful confinement for more than ten days) and 348 (wrongful confinement to extort confession).
Jena, who was probing into the alleged killing of Lily of Dhadasahi village, as the officer-in-charge of Morada Police station and had arrested Lily's husband Sukadev Nayak and her brother Sudam Si after police recovered a decomposed body of a woman from an abandoned well in the village on May 23, 2012.
The local police considered the body belonged to Lily, who was missing from the village.
Jena as the IO of the case filed charge sheet in the case accusing Sukadev and Sudam as main accused in the murder case. Both 'spent six months in jail.
After two years, Lily returned to the village and recorded a statement before a court here claiming she was not killed and said she had fled from the village.
Subsequently, the case was handed over to the Crime Branch of Police for further investigation. Crime Branch investigating officer (IO) Alok Das conducted DNA test and other scientific studies on the recovered body and came to conclusion that the murdered person was not Lily as alleged by the local police.
Today, the crime branch registered a case against Jena after the woman's husband Sukadev, in a statement under section 164 of the CrPC made allegation against Jena.
Jena is presently working as a police sub-inspector in Nabarangpur district.
