CBI court convicts IRS officer, wife in disproportionate asset

A former Commissioner of Income Tax and his wife have been convicted by a special CBI court in Mumbai for amassing wealth worth Rs 1.90 crore, 330 per cent disproportionate to their known sources of income.
The special court had sentenced Ashok Kumar Purwar (a 1971-batch IRS officer), then Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai to three years of simple imprisonment (SI) and his wife Chhaya Purwar to two years of SI, CBI Spokesperson said here today.
The court has also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh on Purwar and Rs 50,000 on his wife, she said.
"CBI had registered a case against Ashok Kumar Purwar and his wife on December 3, 2001 on the allegations that the accused were found to have disproportionate assets around Rs 2.28 crore (about 400 per cent) to his known sources of income," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said here today.

She said the couple were also in possession of flats at Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore and a plot in Agra, Kisan Vikas Patras (KVP) amounting approximately Rs 2.17 crore, branded watches valued around Rs five lakh, and shares and fixed deposites worth about Rs 20 lakh.
"The investigation revealed that Ashok Kumar Purwar had served at many places, including Mumbai and Ahmedabad, as Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of Income Tax. He had amassed assets worth Rs 1.90 crore during the period from 1989 to 2001 which were disproportionate to his known sources of income (about 330 per cent)," she said.
The court, she said, found both the accused guilty and convicted them, and also ordered forfeiture of KVPs and branded watches.
