Committee to examine how to minimise tree-cutting for Metro-3

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today asked the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation to set up a committee to give suggestions on how to minimise the number of trees needed to be cut for the phase III of Metro.
A group of citizens including petitioners in Bombay High Court against felling of trees for the Metro Ashish Paul, Pervin Jehangir, Sanjay Asher and Zoru Bhathena met Fadnavis this morning to discuss the issue.
An official in the Chief Minister's office said Fadnavis asked Metro authorities to set up a committee of government officers and citizens which would give suggestions on how to minimise the number of trees that would be needed to be cut.

"CM assured us that he is pro-environment and the government will take all possible steps to save a maximum number of trees. We told him that more than required trees are going to be chopped down which is a major environmental destruction throughout the city," Zoru Bhathena told PTI.
"The CM told us that Metro is just one step to reduce the carbon footprint....We assured him we are not anti-Metro, in fact we believe Metro will be a boon for Mumbai," Bhathena said.
Initial estimates said more than 5,000 trees are required to be cut for the current proposed route between Colaba and Seepz in Andheri under phase III of Metro.
