Accusing the judiciary of crossing "Laxman rekha," Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik today demanded a special session of Parliament to discuss the "increasing judicial activism."
Naik told reporters that he has written to both Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stating that the government should convene a special session of Parliament to discuss increasing judicial activism, extendig over the issues like liquor and dance bars - primarily the governments' concerns, Naik told reporters here today.
"Judiciary is crossing the Laxman rekha and step-by-step, brick-by-brick, the edifice of the Indian legislatureis being destroyed. It is because the Legislature and Executive fail in their duty that the Judiciary has to step in," the MP said in the letter sent today.
Referring to the recent ban by the Supreme Court on the sale of liquor along the highways, Naik's letter says, "The Supreme Court, in its judgment, has laid down a distance criteria to sell liquor and has also modified its orders giving exemptions to certain north eastern states, which is prima facie the job of the Legislature and the Executive."
"In Goa, highways pass through the heart of the cities and towns leading to the closure of these thousands of liquor shops and bars. The state government has not taken any initiative to approach the court and private efforts have not gone any forward," he said.
