Opposing AAP government's decision to increase VAT rates on fuel, CPI(M) today demanded the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation to stop playing "cynical games" with the public and withdraw the hike immediately.

The Delhi unit of CPI(M) said the decision will trigger rise in prices of essential goods, pinching pockets of the 'aam aadmi'.

"CPI(M) demands AAP government to stop playing cynical games with people of Delhi and withdraw the increase in rates of VAT on petrol and diesel immediately," the unit said in a statement.

Referring to the government's stance that the decision was taken to bring parity in taxes in north Indian states, the Left party said it is an "ill concealed" attempt by the dispensation to deflect its responsibility for this "anti-people" measure.

"Such logic can be used to justify increase in tax burdens and prices of essential commodities in future as well," the party said while expressing its fear.

Taking potshots at the ruling party, CPI(M) said the hike has been announced at a time when the state government has set aside Rs 526 crore for self-glorification.

"This is shameful to say the least," it charged.

The Kejriwal Government increased the VAT rate on petrol from 20% to 25% and diesel from 12.5% to 16.6%, resulting in rise in petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2.78 per litre and Rs 1.83 per litre (approx) respectively.
