The Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills district and four other officials were injured today when students of a government college gheraoed the DC's office and pelted stones at them, forcing the police to resort to lathi-charge and firing of tear gas shells.
"Five officials including myself, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, and police personnel were injured in the stone-pelting incident by students," Deputy Commissioner Arunkumar Kembhavi told PTI.
The DC received injuries in his left wrist when students of Kiang Nangbah Government College at Jowai, the district headquarters, took out a procession without permission and gheraoed the DC's office.
The students have been demanding immediate extension of the main college building, delinking of Class XII, regularisation of services of 13 casual employees, renovation of boys' hostel and repair work of the approach road among other demands.
The students had locked the gates of the college paralysing its functioning since yesterday forcing the police to intervene and break open the lock, the DC said.
Police used water canon, fired tear gas shells and then lathi-charged the students to disperse them, the DC said.
According to unconfirmed reports, around 20 students were injured in the clash with security personnel and admitted in various hospitals.
The Deputy Commissioner expressed concern that students studying in classes XI and XII took part in the agitation.
He said no student in uniform and studying in class XI and XII should be found participating in any protest according to an order of the education department.
The DC said the administration is analysing video footages taken during the protest.
