Feeling the pinch of hike in electricity tariff, Delhi Metro has asked the Urban Development Ministry to expeditiously form a committee for revision of its fares.
The last hike in DMRC fares had occurred over three years back in November 2009, officials said.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief Mangu Singh has in a letter to Secretary (Urban Development) Sudhir Krishna noted that from August 1, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has hiked power tariffs.
Singh has said that the cost of other inputs has also been increasing which is affecting the financial situation of the Delhi Metro.
Officials told PTI that this is the second time this year that Singh has asked for a raise in fares. In his previous letter also, Singh had mentioned the effect of inflation on DMRC's finances.
As per the Delhi Metro Act, the central government may from time to time constitute a Fare Fixation Committee for the purpose of recommending passenger fares.
The Committee shall consist of a chairman and two other members. The chairman of the committee has to be a person who is or has been the judge of the High Court. The UD ministry and the Delhi government appoint one member each to the panel.
