The members of a Parliamentary panel today suggested that Doordarshan should work towards becoming financially self-sufficient.
The members of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) met to examine the Demands for Grants of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) for the financial year 2017-18.
The meeting was chaired by the BJP MP Anurag Thakur.
Reviewing the performance of the Prasar Bharti including Doordarshan and AIR, the members stressed on the need to improve the quality of content.
The members also conveyed to the officials that Doordarshan must work towards improving its financial self-sufficiency, a source said.
In order to increase its viewership, Doordarshan must focus on building its brand, the members said.
The panel also suggested that Doordarshan's and AIR's treasure trove of archives can be made more accessible to the general public, through online digital platforms such as applications, on-demand video etc.
At the same time, the need to promote the domestic manufacturing of Set Top Boxes (STBs) under the government's 'Make in India' scheme was also emphasised, a source said.
Members of the panel also stressed on the need to have STB inter-operability in order to benefit consumers.
