"Emergency is the blackest chapter in the history of Independent India and it harmed the country a lot," Naik said at a programme organised by the IFWJ to mark the 40th anniversary of Emergency.
"The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had forced Emergency fearing that things were going out of her hands...To ensure that such a situation does not arise in future there is a need for continued awareness...This was required in the past and is very much needed today and tomorrow... Democracy demands this," the Governor said.
To another question on demands for making Shah Commission report public and those guilty not getting punishment, Naik said people of the country had punished those responsible for it and it is better that people remain alert instead of blaming anyone.
Terming Emergency as the turning point of his life, he said it was only because of it that he had joined politics.
Referring to attacks on journalists, he said it was perhaps due to the reason that they bring out facts which are not liked by some people and stressed that providing them security was the responsibility of the government.
