A strong explosion ripped through a metro station in Santiago today, injuring five people, one of them seriously, authorities said.
The cause of the blast in the Escuela Militar station was not immediately known, an official with the Carabineros national police force told AFP.
Local media reported that an explosive device had been planted in a trash can.
"Apparently it is not an accidental occurrence," Santiago fire chief Mauricio Repetto told local radio.
The explosion took place during lunch time in a section of the metro dotted with food stalls. Police cordoned off the station.
