With the arrest of five persons, the special cell of Delhi Police today claimed to have busted an inter-state drug syndicate and seized 17.560 kg of heroin with street value of Rs 65 crore.
The arrested have been identified as Ram Avtar (72), Girdhari (43), Pankaj (38), Sangita (27) and Indal Kumar Singh, police said, adding that Ram Kumar headed the syndicate and Pankaj is his son.
"Ram Avtar has a house in Vishnu Garden area where he stored narcotics and carried out processing of heroin. He also used to get 'paper pudias' (packets) prepared in his house," said a senior police official said,.
On April 23, police got information that a woman, identified as Sangita would come to receive a consignment from Ram Avtar and his brother Girdhari Lal in Tilak Nagar Market, the official said, adding that police laid a trap and arrested them.
"Police recovered 5600 paper 'pudias' containing heroin from their possession. Later, a raid was conducted at Ram Avtar's Vishnu Garden house and 10 kg heroin and 15 kg Phenobarbital, a chemical, were recovered from there," he said.
Police said that Ram Avtar's son Pankaj, a resident of Uttarakhand, used to take the heroin and other incriminating material, including Alprazolam, Phenobarbital, Acetic and other precursors, which were used in preparing heroin.
"Also on April 24, we arrested Pankaj from Uttrakhand. Ram Avtar used to get heroin with the help of Girdhari and others and would supply it to Sangita and Indal Kumar, who was later arrested from Pul Mithai area of Delhi on April 26," he added.
Police said that modus operandi of Ram Avtar was to prepare heroin at low cost by using less quantity of crude heroin with chemicals like Alprazolam and Phenobarbital. He would then sell this "improvised heroin" at the same rates to earn quick money.
