The district administration has said that they will send the application of a couple, claiming to be the parents of Geeta, the deaf and mute girl who returned to India from Pakistan recently, to the Ministry of External Affairs for further assistance.
"The application of the couple will be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs and after the MEA's decision, a call will be taken on it," district collector P Narhari told PTI.
Geeta, who had landed in Pakistan accidentally as a child and stayed there for over 10 years, is currently lodged at an institution for the hearing and speech impaired here.
Ramraj Gautam (45) and his wife Anara Devi, hailing from Rama-ka-Purva village of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, claimed that Geeta was their daughter and her original name was Savita.
The couple carried a photograph claiming that it was that of Geeta's childhood.
"We want to meet Geeta just once. If she refuses to recognise us, we will return home immediately," emotionally charged Anara said.
They had expressed their willingness to undergo a DNA test to back their claim of parenthood.
"I am sure that Geeta is my daughter Savita who went missing from my brother-in-law's ashram at Chhapra in Bihar 11 years ago. I and my wife are ready to undergo DNA test to prove our claim," Gautam told PTI.
Stating that his wife's brother was a monk, he said, "I had kept my daughter in his ashram for treatment. She was eight-year-old when she went missing".
Geeta was reportedly only 7-8 years old when she was found sitting alone on the Samjhauta Express at Lahore Station by the Pakistan Rangers 15 years ago.
She was adopted by Edhi Foundation's Bilquis Edhi and lived with her in Karachi. She returned to India on October 26.
