Police inspector D M Patil of the Mumbra police station told PTI that the accused who was aged around 20 years has been arrested by the police and charged under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, he said.
According the police official, both the victim and the accused were residents of the same locality in Diva.
The accused, who has been identified as Amit Patil, alleged caught hold of the girl at about 8.30 pm last night in the locality and attacked her with a sickle, he said.
The Mumbra police is investigating the case, the police official said.
