The gang rape and killing of a college girl at Barasat would be dealt strongly with the case already taken over by the CID, West Bengal ADG (Law and Order) Banibrata Bose said here today.
"The investigation will be done expeditiously and the culprits will be punished severely ... The order has been issued for trial in a fast track court in view of the sensitivity of the incident," Bose said.
The police had taken quick action, he said and stated that three out of four persons mentioned in the FIR have already been arrested in the June 8 incident taking the figure of those taken into custody to eight.
Meanwhile, a five-member women delegation of the Human Rights organisation APDR squatted in front of the chief minister's secretariat at the Writers Buildings with placards in their hands during the day to the state secretariat Writers' Building to protest against the gruesome incident.
They demanded an appointment to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who, however, refused to meet them.
"We are extremely shocked and angry at the brutal gang rape and killing of a first generation college student at Barasat. We condemn this ghastly incident," the women right activists Anuradha Talwar, Bolan Gangopadhyay, Krishna Banerjee, Rangta Munshi and Saswati Ghosh said.
The delegation later handed over its memorandum demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the accused, expeditious investigation and trial, to an official of the CM's secretariat.
The women rights activists also urged the CM to ensure safety and security for women and demanded the removal of inefficient police officials at Barasat, which, they claimed, has grown into a crime-prone area.
