Maharashtra government will soon make mandatory the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) trackers in taxis and autorickshaws in the state.
"GPS trackers would help locate the vehicles," state Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said here today
He announced this while speaking to reporters at a taxi stand outside Vidhan Bhavan after launching a scheme to reserve front seat of shared taxi cabs for women.
Raote said with this scheme, women would not feel discomfort while occupying seats with unknown men at the back seat.
Also, he said, his department was planning to launch a helpline for passengers to lodge complaints against taxis and autorickshaws which refuses to ply passengers.
