HC directs IG (Admn) to assist it in case on CCTV instal'tion
Press Trust of India Chennai : Madras High Court today directed the Inspector General of Police (Administration) to be present in Court to assist it in a case pertaining to a PIL filed on installation of CCTVs in all police stations state-wide and directed him to file an affidavit clarifying some details.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh stated this when two separate petitions filed hy advocates Vengai I Prakash and A Narayanan of 'Change India' came up before it
The bench, after perusing the affidavit by the Deputy Secretary, Home Department, observed that if it takes three years to install CCTV Cameras in 251 police stations, then it would take 18 years to do so in all 1567 police stations in the state
The bench then directed the IG (Administration) to file an affidavit on the quarries raised by the petitioners - whether cameras had night recording features, whether uninterrupted power supply was assured to them, the area which the cameras will cover in Police Stations for surveillance and the manner of surveillance.
It also directed the IG to file an affidavit explaining the facilities made available in the system for Storage and documentation of CCTV Coverage.
The petitioners had sought a direction to government to install CCTV's in all Police Stations in Tamil Nadu, enabling higher department officials to know about the 'atrocities' committed by their subordinates and alleged human rights violations.
