Madras High Court today directed the Commissioner of Police to register a case against music composer Anirudh Ravichander, if a cognisable offence is made out on a petition stating that the contents of a video by him were vulgar and degrading women in general and mothers in particular.
The petitioner S Jebadas Pandian, an advocate, in his petition said publishing or releasing the "obscene and vulgar music video film with derogatory lyrics" is offensive to public morality/sensitivity and moral character.
In the light of ongoing crimes against women, such lyrics abusing motherhood would have the effect of instigating the youth to participate in such acts of obscenity and perversion, the petitioner contended.
The lyrics of the song in the video, targeting women, would also have the effect of triggering religious/communal conflict and was in general an affront to decency and standards of public living.
The petitioner contended that the video was released without obtaining Censor Board certification under the Indian Cinematograph Act-1952.
Besides, the video is violative of the provisions of the Information Technology Act-2000 and the IPC, he said.
Pandian said though he preferred a complaint to the Commissioner of Police and produced the CD containing the offensive music video. However, no action was initiated.
