A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked the Ministries of Information and Broadcasting and Home Affairs, represented by advocate Jasmeet Singh, to submit an affidavit on how these channels and the content shown by them are being regulated.
The ministries as well as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will also have to indicate in their affidavit how content is regulated by them in all TV channels in general.
The court was hearing a plea filed by Nishad Sharma who has alleged that Pakistani channels which were banned by the government were being broadcast by Dish TV without the requisite permissions.
He has also sought orders to the authorities "to impose rigid rules pertaining to channels being aired throughout the country".
Sharma's plea refers to 16 channels, including PTV Home, Hum TV, Express Entertainment, BBSZ, Film Azia, Express News, Ariana TV and Khyber TV, which had been allegedly banned by the government for showing anti-India content.
