The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) will take up project to study the reasons for "recurrence" of jaundice in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Shimla region.
Union Health and Family Welfare minister J P Nadda said here today, "I share the concern of the state government regarding spread of jaundice in Shimla and asked the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to conduct deep study to ascertain the causes of recurrence of the disease in the state," he said.
The inputs are required for chalking out a well-grounded strategy to combat the disease and the study report would be very useful in finding a solution, he said.
Nadda, who held discussions with state Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur, said that he had assured full financial and logistic support to the state for fighting the disease.
Over 250 cases of jaundice have been reported in the state during past few days, he said.
The increase in number of jaundice cases in Shimla and the reports of water contamination due to mixing of sewerage with drinking water source at Ashwani Khud has caused an alarm, Nadda said.
The state health department and Shimla Municipal Corporation have asked the Irrigation and Public Health department to stop supply of water from Ashwani Khud scheme till the sewerage was completely separated and water treatment was done properly to completely eliminate any type of contamination in water, the minister added.
The High Court has also taken notice of spread of jaundice due to supply of contaminated water and asked the concerned department to file the status report, he added.
