India gets special display at 5th Beijing Biennale

India is one of four favoured countries which have been invited to hold exclusive displays in specially created pavilion spaces" according to an official of the Lalit Kala Akademi, the country's national academy of art.

The India Pavilion, set up by the Akademi have handpicked a set of 26 works of art, specially created for the occasion by eleven of the country's topmost artists. These include a wide variety of art trends executed as acrylic works on canvas, graphics, videos, sculptures and installations.

"India's participation at Beijing was the outcome of the dialogues between Lalit Kala Akademi and China Artists Association, with the proposal for holding reciprocal art events among the two nations," says Sudhakar Sharma, Secretary, Lalit Kala Akademi.

"In response to the Indian exhibition at the Beijing venue, China will bring a similar a strong contingent of contemporary art from China to the forthcoming India Triennale. Thus the Indian Special Exhibition is a step towards a serious art initiative of a very high order, with far reaching outcomes," he says.

K R Subbanna, Acting Chairman, Lalit Kala Akademi says, "Apart from attracting record crowds, the India Pavilion is a also a popular draw amongst the youth for its innovative and topical video works, while the eye catching installation of stylized butterfly forms is the favourite shot of the mobile-using Chinese visitors."
