Two men and as many women amateur golfers are set to take part in the 81st Singha Thailand Amateur Open that gets underway at Panya Indra Golf Club in Bangkok tomorrow.
The men's team would be represented by Hemendra Choudhary (no. 4 on the Indian Golf Union's Order of Merit) and Jaibir Singh (no. 8), while the women's team is to feature Seher Atwal, cousin of top men's pro Arjun Atwal, who is no. 3 on the IGU's Order of Merit) and Anisha Padukone (no. 5), a media release from IGU said today.
The four-day stroke-play championship would feature 128 players from 12 countries.
The men's winner would be awarded the King Rama VII trophy and the women's champion would be awarded the trophy by the president of Thailand Golf Association.
Hemendra Choudhary, 20, from Jaipur, recently won the IGU Cochin Amateur and Bengaluru's Jaibir Singh, 25, won the 12th SAARC Team Championship event at KGA in June this year.
Their good form has ensured a spot to represent India at the Thailand event and both will be making their International debuts at the event.
Delhi's Seher Atwal, 17, winner of 2015 IGU Telangana Ladies Amateur Championship, and Bengaluru's Anisha Padukone, 24, would lead the Indian charge with the aim of becoming the first Indian winner of the tournament.
Manisha Jaitha, Vice Chairperson of IGU Ladies Committee who is travelling with the players as team manager said, "Our objective is to give exposure to all the squad members and we have selected these players on the basis of our selection policy as per rotational basis."
"We have been sending our players for this prestigious tournament for a few years and we are excited to participate in it this year as well. Hopefully, we will return with the Thailand Amateur trophy," Jaitha said.
