A 32-year-old Indian man has been honoured by Dubai Police for foiling a daylight robbery by stopping a thief fleeing after stealing nearly Rs 55 lakhs.
Shahnawaz Khan was honoured by the Dubai Police for stopping the thief, pinning him to the ground and recovering the stolen money.
The theft took place when a representative of a private company was going to his office after withdrawing Dh 320,000 (Rs 5,434,696) from a bank in Al Qusais Industrial Area.
When he got inside his car and started moving, he heard a blast in the rear. The man pulled the vehicle over to the roadside and saw one of the tyres had burst. So, after consulting with his boss, the man decided to go to office by foot.
While walking, someone came from behind and snatched the envelope which contained the money from his hand and ran fast.
Khan, who was in his car, saw what had happened. He drove past the fleeing suspect and stopped the car and got out. He intercepted the suspect, pinned him down and called the police, Khaleej Times reported.
The officers arrived soon and arrested the suspect, who is of an Asian nationality and had entered the country on a visit visa. He has no former criminal records.
In a simple ceremony held at Al Qusais police station, Khan was honoured by police station in-charge Col Al Suwaidi, whohanded him a sum of money and a letter of appreciation for his courage and cooperation with the police.
