A three-day-old infant died after he sustained injuries allegedly due to carelessness of an unidentified nursing student at a government-run hospital here, following which a probe has been initiated, hospital officials said today.
"We are investigating the circumstances and factors responsible for the death of the newborn," Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital Superintendent A D Bhatnagar told PTI today.
As per the initial probe, a student of BSc (nursing) pulled off the bed sheet on which the baby boy was sleeping while preparing the bed on December 17. The infant succubmed to his injuries the next day, the Superintendent said.
"We are serving show cause notices to the nursing staff on duty that day, to identify the student responsible for the incident," he said.
Bhatnagar clarified that preparing the bed (for patients) was in the curriculum of nursing course.
He further said that the infant was born in the hospital on December 15 and his parents hailed from Shajapur district of the state.
The child was alone in the ward as his mother who was unwell was admitted to another ward for treatment, the official added.
Asked about the charge that the infant was handed over to his family members without conducting postmortem, Bhatnagar said that the family had in writing stated that they don't want to lodge a report with police.
Meanwhile, MY hospital police post Head Constable Sharad Kumar said that the police has neither been informed in writing nor orally about the incident by M Y hospital.
"Besides, the family members of the deceased also haven't lodged a complaint with us," he said.
"We have come to know that the deceased has been laid to rest. In the midst of this, we can't proceed in the absence of a complaint or directive," he added.
