The UN nuclear agency said today that it is studying a request from Iran that it condemn the purported incursion of an Israeli drone.
Gill Tudor, spokeswoman for the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the Iranian letter, dated September 9, had been circulated to the agency's 162 member states.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard last month said that it shot down an Israeli drone near the country's uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, south of Tehran.
Alluding to the incident, the letter said Iran "reserves the right to undertake all legitimate necessary measures to defend its territory." And it says it expects the IAEA "to condemn this act of aggression."
Iran says its uranium enrichment program is meant only to produce reactor fuel and for medical uses. Israel and the United States fear its ultimate purpose is to make the core of a nuclear weapon.
The United States and five other world powers are demanding that Iran agree to a major long-term cutback of its enrichment program and to other nuclear concessions in return for an end to nuclear-related sanctions. Negotiations have been extended to November from July due to wide differences between the two sides.
