Giving a youth, who was sentenced to five-day imprisonment for drunken driving, an opportunity to reform himself, a Delhi court has directed him to prune park at a district court complex here.
"In order to grant the appellant an opportunity to reform himself...He shall do the community service to clean and prune the park located at Karkardooma court residential complex in as many number of days in which he is able to complete his job, be it four days or ten days," Additional Sessions Judge Savita Rao said.
The court passed the order after hearing an appeal filed by central Delhi resident Gaurav Yadav. Yadav had appealed against the five-day jail term awarded to him by a magisterial court for drunken driving. He was also fined Rs 1,000 for driving an uninsured vehicle.
In his appeal, Yadav said he is only 25-year-old and has clean antecedents. He also said he has aged parents, a wife and a child to look after and his family would be ruined if he is sent behind bars.
While passing the order, the ASJ directed Yadav to do the community service under the supervision of the Assistant Director of the PWD's horticulture department for the court complex and its caretaker.
The ASJ also directed the office bearers to send a report of compliance after the convict completes his services.
