Lawyers of all six district courts in Delhi today observed a day-long strike to protest against the shifting of family courts outside the Karkardooma courts premises.
The strike, called by the Co-ordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations of Delhi, affected work in the six district courts -- Karkardooma, Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Saket, Dwarka and Rohini.
Advocate Arun Rathi, vice-chairman of the committee, said that there was a "complete strike" and only proxy counsel were appearing in the urgent matters today.
"The day-long strike was successful as lawyers did not take part in the judicial proceedings. The strike was called by the committee in support of the Shahdara Bar Association against the shifting of family courts from court premises," Rathi said.
Shahdara Bar Association had observed two days strike last week and had demanded shifting back of the family courts from the new building in Vishwas Nagar in East Delhi to Karkardooma district courts complex.
According to the committee, lawyers' body of the Shahdara bar association had consulted it after which the committee had decided to support their protest.
The committee also said there was enough vacant space in the Karkardooma complex as several rooms were unoccupied and family courts can be set up there and there was no need for moving family courts to any other premises.
As per a recent notification of Delhi Government, the Lieutenant Governor, in consultation with the Delhi High Court, had notified the establishment of "one Family Court each for Central District at Tis Hazari Court Complex, East and North East Districts at Vishwas Nagar Family Court Complex, one Family Court for Shahdara District at Karkardooma Court Complex and two Family Courts for West District at Tis Hazari Court Complex...
