Impressed with the quality of khaadi produced in Tihar jail, BJP MP from New Delhi Lok Sabha seat today said she will wear sarees made from the fabric and also become the brand ambassador of the country's largest prison.
Lekhi, who was attending the launch function of 'Coffee Table Book of Delhi Prisons' also said if she as a parliamentarian will wear khaadi, "then its message will go very far."
During the function, Director General (Prisons) Vimlaa Mehra informed her that the khaadi cloth made by Tihar Jail inmates was used to bind the book.
"I was telling Vimlaaji that the Khaadi cloth which has been used to bind this book is of very good quality and if you can get this woven, I will start wearing these sarees and become your brand ambassador. So when this cloth will be worn in the Parliament of this country, then it message will go very far," Lekhi said.
If Gandhiji can wear this khaadi and chase the British out of this country, then why can't we spread a good message through it, she added.
Chief Guest of the function, Delhi Chief Secretary S K Shrivastava applauded the efforts of prison administration saying that despite overcrowding of prisoners, Delhi Prisons were the trend setter of correctional activities not only in India jails but world over.
"Vimlaaji told us about lack of staff and other shortcoming faced by them. Seeing all the good work that you have put in I think I would have to go out of the way to help you," he said.
He also congratulated the jail administration for achieving record annual turnover of Rs 32.17 crore during the financial year 2012-13 of the Jail Factory.
A new logo of the Jail Factory "TJ" was also launched at the event.
T M Bhasin, CMD, Indian Bank who was also present at the event, appreciated the prison reforms and offered his bank's help in various rehabilitative activities.
The Coffee Table Book, which was launched today, contains the history of the prison, evolution of reforms, important activities and new initiatives along with pictorial representations.
The audience, which included former Tihar DG Kiran Bedi were enthralled by the performance of Tihar Rock Band "Flying souls" at the function.
