Lt Gen Prakash succeeded Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain, who will take over as the Military Secretary to Chief of Army Staff in Delhi.
Gen Prakash, who is an infantry officer of Kumaon regiment, has commanded the Siachen brigade in Ladakh region and a Division in Rajouri area of Jammu region, the spokesman said.
The outgoing Army commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, Lt Gen Hasnain, served in Kashmir in the commander's capacity for nearly 19 months.
The defense spokesman said Gen Hasnain took charge of the 15 Corps during "unprecedented political unrest" when an "extreme volatile environment" prevailed.
He said Lt Gen Hasnain - who promoted the "heart as weapon" policy and travelled extensively across the Valley during his tenure - "has to be credited for the historic transitional phase in Kashmir from the stage of violence to non-violence which is a result of various innovative measures".
