Man arrested for murdering mother-son duo

The gruesome murder of a woman and her HIV-positive son was cracked by the Crime Branch with the arrest of a 33-year-old man whose fondness for a particular brand of whisky helped the police zero in on him.
The accused was arrested yesterday from Japanese Park near Rohini while travelling in his car by the Crime Branch following a tip-off. He was identified as Sanjay Kumar alias Sanjay Arora alias Sanjay Kakkar.
The incident took place on September 12 when the 62-year -old woman and her physically-handicapped and HIV-positive son, aged 40 years, were found murdered at their house in Sector-5, Rohini in Outer Delhi.

"The Crime Branch team which visited the crime scene had found a bottle of Imperial Blue Whiskey besides other things. The team examined family members, friend and associates and also conducted local enquiries which revealed that Sanjay, a friend of the deceased, who resided in Sector-6 preferred to consume this whiskey," said Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand.
When police scrutinised the CCTV footage of the area it revealed that Sanjay had entered the house but was not seen coming out of it from the same get, this further increased suspicion on him and he was finally nabbed yesterday.
During interrogation, Sanjay disclosed that he became friends with the deceased, Jitender Prakash Mishra alias Raju, in 2007. In early 2014, he had given Rs 32,000 and gold chain to Raju as loan. Despite repeated requests, Raju was not returning the money, police said.

On the day of the incident, Sanjay went to Raju's house with a bottle of Imperial Blue Whiskey. Once they consumed alcohol, he demanded money and gold from Raju. When he denied, Sanjay went to the kitchen, took a kitchen knife and attacked him and then throttled him.

"When Raju's mother rushed to save him, Sanjay pushed her on bed and assaulted her with a wooden block. Subsequently, in order to ensure that both of them were dead, he picked up a gas cylinder and bludgeoned both of them with the cylinder. Then he ransacked the house in order to give the appearance that a robbery has taken place," said Chand.

When police checked his house several bottles of Imperial Blue Whiskey were found there as well. A blood stained wooden block used in the murder has also been seized, police said.
Sources, however, said that the case could have been solved earlier had the Special Staff of Outer district police had not missed a crucial clue. Sanjay bought his mobile number in the name of a friend, Anil. Sanjay had diverted calls from his number to a non-existent number to avoid detection.
When the number appeared in Raju's call details, the Special Staff of Outer district called Anil for questioning as the number was on his name but did not bother to check who was using it and allowed him to go, the sources said.
