Nine days after a five-year old girl was allegedly raped in suburban Wadala here, police today arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the case.
"The accused was on the run, but we had got some leads in the case and received information about him, based on which he was arrested from Wadala. He lived near the survivor's house," Ashok Dudhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IV, said.
However, he refused to reveal any further details in this connection.
The accused was arrested by Wadala Truck Terminal police today and would be produced in a local court tomorrow.
Another police officer said, "We will soon get the medical report of the accused to corroborate other circumstantial evidences."
"We would also request the court to give him police custody for interrogation," he added.
According to sources, the picture of the accused was shown to the victim, who identified him.
Police had formed five teams to hunt down the accused and his sketch was also prepared.
According to police, the girl was raped on April 21 and the city police had also announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for anyone providing information about the accused.
The city police had suspended two officers -- Assistant police inspector Sanjeev Nimbalkar of Antop hill police station and assistance sub-inspector Jhavre of Wadala Truck Terminal police station -- for wrangling over the 'jurisdiction' and delaying registration of a rape case even as the victim, a five-year-old girl, awaited medical help.
