A garment shop owner was duped and robbed of Rs 90,000 by a "notorious puncture gang" in central Delhi, police said today.
The incident took place on Tuesday night when the complainant Sanjay Seth (52), owner of garments shop in Karol Bagh, was returning home in Patel Nagar and his car got punctured.
"He was accompanied by his son and uncle. Just as his car passed by the Metro pillar number 128, they had realised that the car's tyre had punctured. The three got off the vehicle to take a look when the members of the puncture gang allegedly struck.
"One of them pretended to be suffering from a fit, fell down on the road as if he had fallen unconscious. The other gang members came and pretended to revive him. Some also tried to make him smell shoes in order to bring him back to his senses," said a senior police official.
This activity drew the attention of Seth, his son and uncle, all of who reached out to the fallen man to see if they could help in any way.
After some time, the man pretended to have gained consciousness and and walked away. Others around him also left the spot.
Seth and his family returned to the car, changed the punctured tyre and returned back to the car only to find the briefcase containing Rs 90,000 in cash and other valuable documents stolen. They then lodged a complaint.
Police suspects that the notorious puncture gang is behind the crime.
"The gang is notorious for sprinkling roads with sharp objects which puncture the tyres passing vehicles. Members of the gang then divert the attention of the occupants of the car and steal valuables lying inside," said the officer.
Police is on the lookout for the gang members.
