The incident occurred last night when Ravindra Das Babu (40), district vice-president of BMS, was fired upon by two bike-borne assailants when he was sitting at a roadside eatery along with his friend Abrar Khan, said police inspector M L Sharma.
The duo, who had covered their faces, attacked Khan with swords in which the latter sustained injuries to his neck, Sharma said, adding that while Babu died on the spot Khan was rushed to Nagpur.
He was serving a life imprisonment and currently out on bail granted by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Sharma did not disclose the case in which Babu was serving life term.
Police suspect the attack was the handiwork of the rival gang of Babu.
Sharma said two out of four persons named in the FIR were detained by the police.
