Mumbai Port, one of the 12 major ports, has reduced vessel-related charges by about 10 per cent to promote coastal shipping of cargo specially automobiles.
"In order to encourage the coastal movement of cargo specially automobiles by Ro-Ro ships and to meet the demand of the Auto Original Equipment Manufacture and Ro-Ro vessels operators, Mumbai Port Trust has reduced vessel related charges by about 10 per cent on the applicable Scale of Rates for coastal vessels with further reduction of wharfage charges," the Ministry of shipping said in a statement.
Providing details of Wharfage rate per unit, the statement said for passenger cars up to 4000 mm length, reduction will be Rs 500 while for those from 4001 mm to 4700 mm length reduction will be Rs 1,000.
Reduction will be to the tune of Rs 1,500 for passenger cars above 4700 mm length & SUVs, MUVs, while for heavy vehicles weighing up to 5 tonnes it will Rs 2,000 and for heavy
vehicles above 5 tonnes it will be Rs 450.
Wharfage is one of the costs of transport goods within the distribution system used by a business to bring its goods to market.
The "reduction in wharfage and Vessel Related Charges which is to the tune of about 50 per cent to 65 per cent will be applicable for one year from June 1, 2016," the statement said.
The reduction in wharfage will encourage movement of domestic cars/ trucks from the manufacturing places such as Chennai, etc to Mumbai, and similarly from Pune/ Nashik to southern and eastern parts of India, it said.
Presently, these movements take place by road. This will also reduce congestion on roads and would be not only a cheaper option but also environmentally preferred option as it reduces carbon foot print.
This would also facilitate faster movement of vehicles meant for distribution and export.
