Taking a serious view of reports of children being arrested and allegedly tortured by Delhi Police to make confessions, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) today said it will enquire into the matter.
"It is a case of serious violation of child rights and the Commission would inquire into the matter. We will also speak to Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and seek his explanation in this regard," NCPCR member Yogesh Dubey told PTI.
"Children under any circumstances cannot be handcuffed and arrested. We will make sure that stringent action is taken against the guilty police officers. We will also take action for rehabilitation of these children," he said.
Dubey said NCPCR will ask the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to take up the issue seriously.
The Women and Child Development Ministry has also written to NCPCR today to conduct a probe into the matter.
According to reports, children between 12-18 age group were arrested by Vijay Vihar police on March 26 in connection with a burglary case in a hardware shop in the locality and were tortured to make confessions in a locked room without the knowledge of their parents.
