There is a need to promote in a "big way" the traditional arts, crafts and rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra said.
"Arts and crafts are valuable symbols of civilisation and cultural heritage which need to be preserved and promoted in a big way," Vohra said after visiting a handicraft exhibition held at Lal Ded Memorial Cultural Centre at Ganpatyar on the bank of river Jhelum here.
The exhibition showcased paintings, papier mache, Khatamband, wood carving, houseboat making, tile making and Pinjrakari products.
The 4-day exhibition, which concluded last evening, was jointly organised by Asian Heritage Foundation, state chapter of INTACH and the tourism department.
Referring to the Lal Ded Memorial Cultural Centre set up by the Tourism Department, the Governor said this could be a great source of attraction for the people, particularly tourists.
The Governor, who was accompanied by his wife Usha Vohra, evinced keen interest in the art pieces and lauded the craftsmanship and artistic talents of the artists.
They interacted with the artists who participated in the Exhibition organised on the concept "Crafting Hands: Sheher", an official spokesman said.
