National Human Rights Commission today issued a notice to Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi in connection with a case regarding a man allegedly being kept in illegal judicial custody.
According to a statement released by the NHRC, the notice was issued after the commission took cognizance of a media report which claimed that due to carelessness of Delhi Police, an accused had remained in the illegal judicial custody for about two months.
It was reported that the staff of Kotwali Police Station had arrested one Irfan in a case of kidnapping and later produced him before the court on June 15, 2014. However, without getting any extension for his judicial custody, they sent him to jail where he remained for about two months.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the right to life. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi calling for a report within four weeks, the statement said.
