Nifty ends at 2016 closing high above 8200, up 39 points

Equity benchmark Nifty gained modestly by 39 pts during the fag end of the trading session spurted by index heavyweights mainly Metal, Banking, Infra and Auto stocks helped to trade in green. While, profit-booking in IT and Pharma stocks continued to put pressure ending the day with modest rise.
Meanwhile, In overseas stock markets, Japan's Nikkei fell sharply following a jump in the yen, while European markets were flat in the run-up to a key European Central Bank (ECB) meeting.
Back home, Nifty opened on a negative note with a loss of 23 pts and witnessed very quite movement, thus trading in narrow range with negative bias. After first half some buying helped Nifty to trade in positive territory and posted a day high at 8230 by recovering 75 points from a low of 8155.
The 50-share index closed up 8200 above for first time since October 27, 2015.
The 50-share Nifty resumed lower at 8,156.90 and moved in a range of 8,229.50 and 8,154.75 before ending at 8,218.95, showing a gain of 39 points or 0.48 per cent.
On the sectoral front, Metal rose by (1.86 pct), PSU Bank (1.26 pct), PVT Bank (0.90 pct) Finance Service (0.88 pct), Bank (0.83 pct), Media (0.74 pct) and Infra (0.65 pct)
However, Pharma eased by (0.50 pct) and IT (0.32 pct).
Among the index gainers were, Coal India (3.42 pct), Yes Bank (3.06 pct), Hindalco (2.86 pct), Tata Steel (2.56 pct) Axis Bank (2.42 pct) Bank Of Baroda (2.23 pct), Hul (1.92 pct) and IndusInd Bank (1.83 pct).
Index laggards included, Wipro down by (2.54 pct), Hcl Tech (1.80 per cent), SunPharma (1.03 pct), Lupin (1.00 pct) and InfraTel (0.95 pct).
A total of 785 shares declined, 767 advanced, while 77 ruled steady.
Turnover in cash segment fell to Rs 16,481.63 crore from Rs 17,383.75 crore yesterday. A total of 8,278.55 lakh shares changed hands in 76,90,943 trades.
The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 98,18,249 crore.
