Nifty slips 17 points, ends at 8,947

NSE Nifty slipped 16.55 points to end at 8,946.90 today as investors booked profits ahead of key election results amid mixed global cues.
Metal, PSU bank, auto, private bank and finance service sectors witnessed selling, while realty, media, energy and IT shares were in demand.
Overseas, European and Asian stocks witnessed a mixed trend amid expectations of a rate hike announcement in the US this month.
The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened higher at 8,977.75 and hovered between 8,977.85 and 8,932.80 before closing at 8,946.90, a modest loss of 16.55 points, or 0.18 per cent. It saw an intra-day movement of about 45.05 points.
Sector-wise, Metal fell 1.75 per cent, PSU Bank 0.60 per cent, Auto 0.47 per cent, Private Bank 0.20 per cent, Bank 0.17 per cent and Finance Service 0.12 per cent.
Realty rose by 0.83 per cent, followed by Media 0.62 per cent, Energy 0.30 per cent and IT 0.19 per cent.
Major index losers were Hindalco (3.51 per cent), Tata Steel (2.17 per cent), Infosys (1.36 per cent), Lupin (1.35 per cent), and Axis Bank (1.32 per cent).
Notable gainers were Adani Ports (1.68 per cent), ONGC (1.34 per cent), BPCL (1.31 per cent), TCS (1.10 per cent) and IndusInd Bank (0.84 per cent).
A total of 970 scrips declined, 679 advanced, while 82 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 112.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 19,729.33 crore from Rs 19,153.01 crore yesterday.
A total of 9,453.05 lakh shares changed hands in 7,288,818 trades. The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 11,589,395.96 crore.
