The decision to increase the number of ICU beds was taken as part of efforts to enhance infrastructure in the major hospitals, he said.

"Now we have around 14 lakh senior citizens in the city. We must have adequate infrastructure to take care of their medical requirements," Walia said, adding that the maximum requirement of ICU beds come from senior citizens.

Addressing a function organised on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, he said Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in East Delhi will be the first hospital to have the additional beds in its ICU.

Walia said health camps for senior citizens were organised today in the Out Patient Department of 21 Delhi government hospitals. Spectacles and hearing aids were provided free of cost to the senior citizens attending the camps.
