BJP's move to expand Hindu vote base in Kerala suffered a blow today with Nair Service Society, an outfit of the state's upper caste Nair community, ruling out truck with any political party or religious formation.
"NSS is not ready for formation of a political party or be part of a broad Hindu alliance by sacrificing its core values," NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair said.
His statement comes close on the heels of BJP national leadership's bid to firming up alliance with the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP), an outfit of Kerala's numerically strong backward Ezahava community, and other Hindu caste organisations ahead of the Assembly polls due next year.
Two days after SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellapally Natesan's much publicised meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nair said NSS, founded by Mannath Padmanabhan, is apolitical and it stands for secular principles and democratic values in Indian politics.
Making his stand clear on the reservation policy, Nair said the NSS wants reservation for the economically backward section in the upper caste communities in government jobs.
The SNDP, however, wants continuation of present reservation policy.
BJP state President V Muraleedharan had yesterday said that a closely knit relationship had been evolved between BJP and SNDP through discussions but there has to be some more clarification on various aspects regarding the partnership.
