A local resident from suburban Bhayander has launched an online petition seeking support from people to join him in the demand to extend the Mumbai Metro Corridor from Andheri till Bhayander.
The petition posted on October 17 on online platform, Change.Org, petitioner Natwar Lal Daga said he has sought support of lakhs of Mumbaikars to join him in the demand from the government to extend Mumbai Metro Corridor till Bhayandar in neighbouring Thane from the current end-point, Dahisar.
The petition would be submitted to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the nodal agency for executing the project, he said.
Daga said in the petition any metro line that originates either from DN Nagar (in Andhei West) or Andheri East, if extended upto Bhayandar, it would a breather for lakhs of commuters.
State government yesterday cleared two new metro lines in the city and its suburbs which included Thane-Bhiwandi- Kalyan Metro Line 5 and Lokhandwala-Jogeshwari-Vikhroli- Kanjurmarg Metro line 6 corridors.
The 18.5-km-long DN Metro to Dahisar corridor's civil work has started from this month.
"Millions of people travel through local trains in Mumbai. With rising population of Mumbai city each day, commuters don't even get place stand inside the trains, they keep hanging out resulting in deaths on a daily basis," the petition read.
Daga, an investment expert in stock market, who travels daily from Bhayandar to Andheri either by car or local train, said around 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh people commute from Mira road and Bhayander every day towards main city and other suburban stations.
"Looking at the current situation it will be a great relief for commuters if the Metro service is extended till Bhayander, so that it becomes easy for people to travel and will save precious lives of people, it said.
Speaking to PTI, Daga said, "It is welcoming move that the government is on fast-forward mode on infrastructure project, but real test would to meet the deadline.
