Phase I work of 'Statue of Unity' project underway: Guj CM

Works related to phase-I of the ambitious 'Statue of Unity' project, which envisages raising a 182-metre tall statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has commenced at its site near Sardar Sarovar dam, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel told the Legislative Assembly today.
In her written reply to a question by the BJP MLA Suresh Patel during the Question Hour, Patel, who handles the Narmada Department among others, said the work order for the project had been given on October 27 last year and that the government has planned to finish the project within 42 months.
In his written question, Patel sought to know about the timing of awarding of the contract, its status and completion period.

Giving details about the progress of the project, Patel stated the contractor company has already started works related to phase-1, which include site mobilisation, building of labour camps and construction material stock yard, geological survey, building of the mockup statue and other works related to design and engineering.
The CM stated the contractor has submitted 93 project-related drawings which are being checked by government.
The project was proposed by the then chief minister of Gujarat and incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
