Haryana Government has made it compulsory for candidates of the upcoming Panchayat elections in the state to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the power department for filing their nomination.
"It will be ensured that the candidates and their family members have cleared their electricity dues before NOC is issued," a spokesperson of the power department said here today.
The move would help expedite recovery of outstanding electricity bills in rural areas, he said.
"Candidates are required to submit a copy of ration card with details of their family members so as to process the NOC," the spokesperson said.
"Currently, defaulters in rural areas of 10 districts owe the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) around Rs 1,200 crore," he said.
The district of Rohtak tops the list with defaulters owing the department Rs 374 crore, followed by Kaithal with an outstanding sum of Rs 269 crore and Jhajjar with pending bills amounting to Rs 150 crore, the spokesperson said, adding UHBVN officials have prepared and updated the defaulter list.
