The heir to the British throne was on his first public engagement since the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth earlier this month to new baby girl.
"She is beautiful. I was hoping for a grand-daughter - someone to look after me when I am very old," Prince Charles said.
He was on a walkabout at an experimental model town development, Poundbury, he had set up in the county of Dorset in the south-west of England in the 1990s.
"A Charlotte Rose? You have managed to do that already? How marvellous. How jolly nice to see it will look beautiful in my gardens," the Prince of Wales said.
Poundbury is an urban extension to the Dorset county town of Dorchester and is based on the prince's planning ideals.
The development aims to combine social and private housing with work and leisure facilities to create a "walkable community".
The Prince also officially opened the Poundbury Cancer Institute in the town and met staff.
