The dreaded Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) disease has killed 3,613 pigs in six districts of Mizoram since early April this year, according to the records of the state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department.
The disease has struck the six districts of Champhai, Serchhip, Lunglei, Lawngtlai, Saiha and Aizawl and only two districts of the state, Kolasib and Mamit, were spared.
A technical consultation meeting on PRRS held at Aizawl today discussed about bio-security, sero-surveillance and treatment protocol to contain outbreak of the disease, though veterinarians claimed the outbreak was on the wane.
An official statement said the state government had prepared and sent a proposal on an Action Plan for Control and Containment of PRRS to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare in Delhi.
The proposals included establishment of quarantine camps in the state and recruitment of additional para-veterinarians, the statement added.
Meanwhile, district deputy commissioners along the international borders and inter-state boundaries have issued orders prohibiting import of animals from outside and rapid response teams were constituted in all the eight districts.
