Ragging at SVNIT: Two students suspended

Two students of the city-based Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) were today suspended for one year by the disciplinary committee for ragging a first-year student on the campus.
However, the committee spared three other students, who were alleged to be involved in the incident last week, for their "lesser" role.
"Out of total five students involved in ragging, we have suspended two of them for one year, as they were found to be actively involved in the incident. Involvement of other three was less thus we have decided to de-grade their marks. We will cut one grade from whatever grade they will get in next exam," SVNIT Director PD Pore said.

The incident came to light last Friday when the first-year student filed a complaint with college authorities saying five of his seniors had harassed him on November 12.
The student (18) told the university authorities that he was thrashed and abused by the seniors, students of different streams of the institute, in the hostel.
Following the incident, the college had filed a complaint with Umra police station here.
Police Sub-Inspector R R Rathwa, who is handling the probe, had said an FIR will be filed only after questioning both sides.
