Legendary classical singer Girija Devi says remixes are diluting the real essence of music.
However, the 86-year-old singer from Banaras gharana, feels people, who understand music will not get affected by the adulteration.
"Remixes are diluting music and would continue to dilute, the discerning listeners who are true music aficionados will always strive for the purity of music," Girija Devi told PTI after performing at Samagam, a fusion music evening presented by a leading media group of Kolkata.
Asked about the proliferation of reality music shows, she said she doesn't have anything against them, but was more vocal about propagation of India's rich classical music.
"We must work towards retaining the great legacy of our shastriya sangeet as well as retaining devotional songs like kirtan and bhajans which are the bedrock of our rich cultural heritage.
"Our Indianness and identity are related to such music. We must keep this tradition alive by any means, we must preserve them for future," she said.
Talking about her association with classicists of Bengal, Girija Devi said she respects them a lot.
"I have huge regard for all the vocalists and instrumentalists of Bengal, of my age and elders. I also do like the way the present generation musicians of Bengal are carrying forward the rich classical legacy," she said referring to the classical artists ranging from vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan to percussionist Pandit Bickram Ghosh and Pandit Tanmoy Bose.
