A day after DHCBA President Rajiv Khosla was suspended as a member of the Bar, the Delhi High Court today witnessed a row between members of the Executive Committee (EC) and supporters of the Association's Chief.
The two groups came face to face in the high court's lobby area this morning and started hurling abuses at each other, which went on for close to an hour.
Later in the day, Khosla called a General Body Meeting and took action against the executive committee's decision and it was learnt from people present in the meeting that Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) Secretary Abhijat's membership was temporarily suspended.
It is also learnt that Khosla has called off the strike which began on July 22.
"Secretary DHCBA Abhijat is suspended by special house on July 24. Strike not to continue without approval of GBM. Members to resume work on Monday (July 27)," a message circulated by DHCBA among its members reads.
When contacted, Abhijat refuted the news of his suspension, saying no special GBM was held as it can only be held if executive committee calls it in writing seven days in advance or if 10 per cent of the members requisition it in writing.
"None of this has happened. A gathering of lawyers, most of whom were not even members of the Association, cannot be a GBM. There is no question of any resolution being passed. I am firmly in place as the Secretary and transacted official business through out the day...
"The executive committee will take a call on the call for abstention of work tomorrow morning. As of now, there is no resolution withdrawing the call (of strike)," Abhijat said.
Khosla, who was not present in the meeting when he was suspended, however, had opposed the resolution and had said that DHCBA executive committee did not have the power to take such a decision and that he is still the president of the Bar.
DHCBA went on strike in the high court to protest the tabling in the Lok Sabha of a bill for increasing the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts.
Unhappy over its President not supporting the ongoing strike in the Delhi High Court, DHCBA had on July 23 with immediate effect temporarily suspended Khosla from the post as he was allegedly acting against the interests of its members in view of an anti-strike SMS allegedly circulated by him.
